Town of Weddington made history around 1760 with the migration of Northerners of European decent. When Reuben Boswell from Virginia donated four acres of land to the Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church in 1824, the community evolved into a progressive town. When Boswell’s grandson named Reuben Boswell Weddington was born, he continued his grandfather’s legacy and the church honored his family by renaming it as “Weddington Methodist Church” in 1899. The town took its name from the church in 1983.

Situated about 15 miles away from downtown Charlotte and just across the Mecklenburg County line in Union County, Weddington shares the scenic forests and farmland that surround the area with its neighboring communities, such as Waxhaw, Wesley Chapel, Marvin and Matthews. Primarily a residential community with only 16 acres of land zoned for business, Weddington is one of the wealthiest towns in the state of North Carolina, having the highest per capita income of any town in the region.
